Three sesame genotypes (Rama, SI 1666 and IC 21706) were treated with physical (γ-rays: 200 Gy, 400 Gy or 600 Gy) or chemical (ethyl methane sulphonate, EMS: 0.5%, 1.0%, 1.5% or 2.0%) mutagens and their mutagenic effectiveness and efficiency were estimated in the M2 generation. The M3 generation was used to identify the most effective mutagen and dose for induction of mutations. The average effectiveness of EMS was much higher than γ-rays. The lowest dose of γ-rays (200 Gy) and the lowest concentration of EMS (0.5%) showed the highest mutagenic efficiency in all genotypes. Analysis of the M3 generation data based on parameters such as the variance ratio and the difference in residual variances derived from the model of Montalván and Ando indicated that... |

The agriculture has an outstanding importance both in social and economic point of view, especially in the countries where the agriculture plays a vital role in economy. This paper mainly focuses on the situation in the Central and Eastern European countries (CEECs). The share of agriculture in CEECs is more significant both in GDP and employment than in the old member states of EU. To be competitive on the single market, we have to know the advantages and disadvantages, strength and weakness of different sectors of agriculture. Traditionally, in these countries to measure the effectiveness, the partial factor analyses are used. To get more accurate overview, we need to use more wide technique to sampling measurement. This paper summarizes the measurement... |

Responsibility for the management of many protected areas in the Northern Territory, Australia, is shared between the management agency and the aboriginal owners of that land. We describe (1) the creation and types of indicators developed by partners in a participatory process to measure management effectiveness, (2) the assessment method used to monitor progress, and (3) the results of the first cycle of evaluations in four jointly managed parks. Although each pilot park area has distinctive features, we were able to identify a set of twelve common indicators that were applied across the four park areas. The agreed indicators, which were scored using a color scale to indicate level of achievement, were primarily concerned with process rather than outcome,... |

Wildlife–vehicle collisions, especially with deer (Odocoileus spp.), elk (Cervus elaphus), and moose (Alces alces) are numerous and have shown an increasing trend over the last several decades in the United States and Canada. We calculated the costs associated with the average deer–, elk–, and moose–vehicle collision, including vehicle repair costs, human injuries and fatalities, towing, accident attendance and investigation, monetary value to hunters of the animal killed in the collision, and cost of disposal of the animal carcass. In addition, we reviewed the effectiveness and costs of 13 mitigation measures considered effective in reducing collisions with large ungulates. We conducted cost–benefit... |

The objective of this paper was to analyze the risk protection provided by the futures contracts traded at CBOT (Chicago Board of Trade) at different delivery months to Brazilian Soybean hedgers. The empirical approach adopted was the estimation of hedging effectiveness between every Brazilian production state and the CBOT futures contracts. The results showed that the contracts for delivery in the second semester are more effective, mainly those for delivery in July and August. Moreover, supply shocks in the U.S. can make even the contracts for delivery in November and January to be very effective because of stronger procurement for Brazilian soybeans. The results also show that hedging effectiveness is larger near export harbors, as they were the cases... |

ABSTRACT The goal of this study was to analyze the leaf anatomy and physiological behavior of Brachiaria grass plants (Urochloa decumbens) under different water conditions and with the application of sethoxydim herbicide. The used experimental design was the completely randomized one, with four replications, consisting of a 3 x 2 factorial scheme, with the combination of three water managements (-0.03, -0.07 and -1.5 MPa) with and without the application of sethoxydim herbicide + Assist mineral oil, at the recommended dose for the species (184 g a.i. ha-1). The assessed physiological and anatomicalal parameters were photosynthetic rate, stomatal conductance, transpiration, difference between leaf and room temperature, dry mass of plants, thickness of... |

This study evaluated the effectiveness of two HAART regimens concomitant to rifampicin based tuberculosis (TB) treatment. Patients with TB/HIV diagnosis followed at the TB program between June 2000 and March 2005 were prospectively evaluated. The different HAART regimens in antiretrovirals (ARV) treatment naïve and ARV experienced patients were compared. The effectiveness of HAART was defined as a VL <80 copies/mL from month 4 to month 10 after TB treatment. One hundred and forty-two patients were included. Among these, 68 (47%) were treatment naïve and 76 (53%) previously exposed. Odds ratio (OR) in naïve patients treated with efavirenz (EFV) based regimen (n=42) compared to ritonavir/saquinavir (RTV/SQV) based regimen (n=26) was 8.0 (CI=1.67-38.35,... |

The change of the political Hungarian regime in 1990 affected deeply the economy of the country. This change made effects in each national branch, thus in the agriculture, as well. A lot of new companies dealing with agricultural production and trading has also been established in these years. Since the early '90s a lot of EU support programmes were available targeting these enterprises and providing them to strengthen their competitiveness. One of these programmes was the PHARE IPP Project for the subsidisation of the agricultural investments (between 1996-1998). The University of Debrecen was involved in the implementation, monitoring and assessment process of this project. Based on the results and suggestions of the university, new supporting elements... |

ABSTRACT This study aimed to evaluate the control of Rottboelia spp. with the formulated mixture diuron + hexazinone + sulfometuron-methyl and the emergence of this weed in the months of April, May, June, July, August, September, October and November 2012 in sugarcane cultivation, cultivar RB867515. The experimental design consisted of randomized blocks, with treatments in a 4 x 4 factorial arrangement with four replicates for the months of April to November. The emergence tests used a randomized block design, in a 8 x 5 split plot arrangement with four replicates. The analyzed factors were the rates of the formulated mixture (diuron + hexazinone + sulfometuron-methyl), which consisted of: 1,809.00 + 510.00 + 43.50 g ha-1 (T2); 1,507.50 + 425.00 + 36.25 g... |

Because of their potential for N2 biological fixation, legumes are an alternative source of nitrogen to crops, and can even replace or supplement mineral fertilization. A greenhouse experiment was carried out to evaluate temporal patterns of velvet bean (Mucuna aterrima) green manure release of nitrogen to rice plants, and to study the fate of nitrogen from velvet bean in rice cultivation. The isotopic dilution methodology was used. Treatments consisted of a control and 10 incubation periods of soil fertilized with 15N-labeled velvet bean (0, 20, 40, 60, 90, 120, 150, 180, 210, and 240 days). The plant material was previously chopped, sifted (10 mm mesh sieve) and oven-dried (65ºC). Incubation of the plant material (2.2 g kg-1 soil) was initiated by the... |
